Staffordshire Spill Vase

Usually a spill vase would have been placed on the fireplace mantel to hold rolled paper tapers called spills, which were in use until matches were invented after the turn of the 20th century. These spills transferred fire from the fireplace to candles, lamps, or a gentleman's cigar. Use it as intended or as a bud vase. England, 1890. 8 inches tall.
